This can be done by choosing certain heart healthy foods and eating the proper portions. Just as important as choosing the correct foods is the method in which you prepare them. Soluble Fiber Eat fiber-rich foods. There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. According to the USDA and the Mayo Clinic, both types of fiber are needed to aid digestion and function properly. Soluble fiber, however, is the type that can help eliminate cholesterol from your body. Foods high in soluble fiber include whole grains (especially oats and barley), legumes and lentils, healthy oils of the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated varieties, nuts and flax seeds, plus fruits and vegetables. The American Dietetic Association recommends 20 to 30 grams of soluble fiber daily, the equivalent of five servings. Eat citrus fruit, berries, apples, apricots, carrots, cabbage and sweet potatoes.
