Ketogenic Diet vs. Low Carb Diet: Thomas DeLauer-
Ketosis to Help Your Business?
-Ketosis is when your body turns to fat rather than carbohydrates for energy. Ketosis can occur during fasting, when you reduce the amount of carbs or calories in your diet, during pregnancy or after exercising for a long period of time. Many diets use ketosis as the means of burning fat while maintaining muscle – examples include the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. This strategy can also lead to decreased hunger. How long does it take to kick your body into fat burning, ketosis mode? Roughly 3-4 days of consuming less than 50 carbs per day, the equivalent of 2 bananas. Benefits include weight loss, seizure prevention, cardiovascular health and type-2 diabetes help, to name a few.
How does it Work? When glucose is in short supply, your liver will break down fats into ketones, which are then used throughout your body for energy. Muscles and other tissues in your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy metabolism. In a healthy person, the production of ketones for energy is the body’s natural response to starvation, so this happens when dieting, overnight and during fasting.
Glucose or Ketones: Which is More Effective? Many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, are already being treated by the ketogenic diet. The mechanisms to why it helps the brain are still being studied, but there are some possible reasons that ketones seem to be a good energy source for the brain. One major Ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, provides more energy per unit of oxygen than glucose, and thus may be even more efficient than glucose at providing energy to the brain. (3)
-The ketogenic diet has also been found to increase the number of mitochondria in brain cells. In a 2004 study on rats, one group was fed a ketogenic diet while the other was fed a normal diet. A positive impact was found on the gene expression for mitochondrial enzymes in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. (4)
Ketosis and Body Water Composition: High fat and low carb diets are known to lead to fast weight loss. The fast weight loss is due to water weight being shed (5)
-When you decrease carbs, you decrease water storage in the body.
Who Can Benefit From Ketosis? If you are looking to shed some body fat, ketosis may be a good tool. This can go along with an exercise regimen as you maintain muscle while losing fat. Ketosis can also benefit those who need to boost brain power as energy may be utilized more effectively in the brain.
*Be careful because those with diabetes can get too high of a level of ketones in their blood, which is very dangerous. This occurs due to the low levels of insulin in the blood, which will signal the body to produce excess ketones that will build up in the blood, making the blood pH too low.

  1. I`ve truly followed the “fizy unique plan” for 2 weeks and i also have lost 13 lbs already. It is probably the easiest diet to follow I have ever tried out. You must google the “fizy unique plan” to find out more!

  2. …. Thomas, this doctor says that Whey Protein isolate is really bad. He says we should only take concentrates .. Please watch the video in the link and let me know .. I've been taking Native grass fed whey protein isolates for quite some time now and I don't wanna have any complications in the future.. While most say that Isolates are the best, why do some oppose it.. Please tell me

  3. I run 7 miles three times weekly and average 51:25 for seven miles and have followed a strict ketogenic diet for 3 months straight. I understand we all react differently to diet and exercise, but it has not affected my endurance what so ever. If anything, as I have been losing weight over the months my lower bmi has allowed for my running times to improve over the weeks. Started out at 52:37 (237 lbs) for seven miles and within 7 weeks have worked to a consistent 51:25 (221 lbs). Prior to the ketogenic diet started 9 weeks ago I was on low carb (less than 100 grams/day and jump started my weight loss from 251 to 237 over a 3 month period. They both seem to work well for me and my body. Overall, I like the ketogenic diet as it requires eating less often and as busy as my schedule is it is easier to maintain. Plus who doesn't love eating bacon and sausage throughout the week!

  4. It's funny that people still follow a ketogenic diet and believe that it is a healthy diet to follow. Low carbohydrate diets are associated with increased all-cause mortality risk. Another point is that the brain runs on glucose which is found densely packed in carbs. Why allow the body to run off fat which when converted to glucose causes oxidation.

  5. Thomas , Dr. Terry Zachary here, touching base…just new to your channel, have really loved the videos I've viewed esp your Bulletproof coffee replacement and getting back into ketosis vid. I am the developer of Handmaster Plus. After working with athletes and musicians in my practise for a decade, I realized that traditional 'squeeze-only' hand exercise was a problem, not only for muscle and joint imbalance and instability, but for something that you have a strong grasp on – LYMPHATIC FLOW/DRAINAGE!!! I know it is a huge factor why Handmaster Plus results are so powerful, but when I speak about it, the eyes start a rolling!!! I would love you to test Handmaster Plus (if you haven't already). Get in touch with me at your leisure. I'll send some samples. Maximum strength, length, muscle balance & lymph flow IS NOT POSSIBLE with old 'squeeze-only' hand exercise approaches. It is costing people finger thumb hand wrist carpal tunnel & elbow health & performance. We need new leaders in fitness. You appear to be one!! Hope to hear from you soon. PS, we are already doing well selling around the world, so not a PR play, our goal is to evolve health and performance. Best, Terry

  6. Mr. Thomas DeLauer, thank you for all of your videos, I'm so grateful for your help . Question : does nitric oxide interfere with keto diet ? , does alprazolam interfere with keto diet ?

  7. In ketosis I found the blissful mental effect. The energetic effect. I dropped 60lbs in 30months. No lack of strength or energy. I never counted my fats. Only dropped my carbs and increased my protein. Workout was between 2-3hrs a day. Weights 90% cardio 10%. Ketosis is worth it!!

  8. as far as i know both glucose and ketones are converted into ATP and it happens for both in the cells mitochondria, so what u said seems to be incorrect.?

  9. I understand why it works and how to get into ketosis. But our bodies use glycogen for fuel…. so why the obsession to train our bodies to use ketones instead! This is just another fad! First we had all the protein heavy meat heads…. then we had the carb haters….. and now we have the fat promoters! Eat natural healthy whole foods! Not difficult!!

  10. The problem with people feeling like shit and not feeling like shit is completely psychological in a time reference of the first few days, ketosis is a natual state that's been there for millions of years to help us survive so the ketosis being the reason for feeling like shit is highly unlikely and it's more or less your brain faking it to get a quick fix.

  11. I enjoy the way you present these videos and I've watched quite a few. As in this one you often mention MCT oil. I have some nice organic MCT oil that I've been adding to my diet. My concern, or question, is what is a typical normal amount of MCT oil to take daily when you are in ketosis ?or is there a way to determine it based on body weight?
Knowing that is the only way I know how to implement your recommendation on when to double up on the amount of MCT oil. Thanks. Liked and subbed
