New research in the US gives clear proof that weight-loss surgery can reverse and possibly cure diabetes, and doctors say it should be offered sooner to more people with the disease – not just as a last resort.
The two studies, released on Monday, are the first to compare stomach-reducing operations to medicines alone for “diabesity” – Type 2 diabetes brought on by obesity.
Millions of Americans have this and cannot make enough insulin or use what they do make to process sugar from food.
Both studies found that surgery helped far more patients achieve normal blood-sugar levels than medicines alone did.
The results were dramatic.
Some people were able to stop taking insulin as soon as three days after their operations.
Cholesterol and other heart risk factors also greatly improved.
Doctors do not like to say “cure” because they cannot promise a disease will never come back.
But in one study, most surgery patients were able to stop all diabetes drugs and have their condition stay in remission for at least two years.
None of those treated with medicines alone could do that.
New York resident Tamikka McCray was one of the surgery patients.
The 39-year-old, who works for the city’s department of human services, struggled with obesity for years, like much of her family
So as a last resort, in August of 2010, she underwent weight loss surgery.
A healthy A1c is 6 or below.

Diabetes effects all body and organ systems. It’s the number one cause of blindness, amputations and kidney failure. Some studies show that weight loss surgery can reverse diabetes and the complications associated with it.

Approximately 70 percent of patients who are on insulin going into weight loss surgery will come off of their insulin completely following the procedure, specifically with gastric bypass.

Gastric bypass surgery involves creating a small two-ounce pouch out of the stomach and diverting the first 3 feet of the intestines so that they are bypassed and do not absorb as much of what you eat. It also restricts the amount of food you can eat because of the small size of the pouch.

Anyone who has a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of more than 40 can be considered a candidate for weight loss surgery. You can also be considered if you have a BMI of more than 35 with co-morbidities, such as diabetes or hypertension.

In addition to diabetes, weight loss surgery has been shown to improve migraine headaches, urinary incontinence and osteoarthritis. It may also reduce the risk for certain types of cancer.
