What if I told you that 1 out of every 5 pregnant women in the United States goes to bed hungry? Now, what if I told you that because they went to bed hungry their babies are now prone to have a chronic disease as an adult and, not only that, but their grandchildren as well. This unfortunate fact is a huge problem.

On the other side of the spectrum, 1 out of every 3 pregnant women is overweight. This again has the same negative effect. Their children and their grandchildren will most likely have a chronic disease.

Dr. Lawrence D. Longo of Loma Linda University Health is one of the world’s most respected specialists in developmental physiology.

His research on maternal health has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for the last 50 years. Today, we all know that smoking while pregnant has a negative effect on a child. Well, we can thank Dr. Longo for that.
His most recent research has been focused on nutrition in pregnant women.

It’s a very sobering reality to think in terms of how something that happened during one pregnancy can have effects throughout several generations. One finds a host of diseases related to the cardiovascular system, hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, to aspects of metabolism, type 2 diabetes, and now the whole panoply of neuropsychiatric disorders which are showing up.

Dr. Longo and his team of researchers have studied how protein deprivation during the course of gestation will have these effects on one’s health.

I think that as a society we should give more attention to pregnancy and early life in development.

Now that we know what the consequences can be as our children become adults, we can’t stress the health advice enough.

Eat a balanced diet with enough protein and nutrients; take a prenatal vitamin every day with folic acid and DHA; and if you’re overweight, try as hard as you can to get a healthy weight by the time you conceive.

Eating During Pregnancy for Optimum Health and Minimum Weight Gain

The good news about healthy eating during pregnancy is that if you consider yourself to be a healthy eater already, you are well on your way to developing a wonderful pregnancy diet. Congrats!

Not Sure What to Eat While Pregnant? You’re Not Alone

However, if you are still a little clueless on what you should be ingesting, I can assure you that here are no strange foods you have to stockpile, no odd pills you have to pop, and no major overhaul that your diet must undergo to get your baby fed properly.

Your pregnancy diet plan should be centered on knowing what to eat when and why. Proper nutrition for pregnancy is simply a more attuned understanding of what your growing body needs.

So What Does a Pregnant Body Need?

To make sure that your baby is properly fed all throughout the day try to adhere to eating six small meals a day. Eating smaller meals more often will keep your body from feeling starved and your blood sugar from dropping. It will also help keep your portion sizes at each meal in check.

It has been shown that if you eat six small meals a day, your overall weight gain is more likely to fall between the healthy 25-35 pound range which is the recommended amount for optimum health.

Eating During Pregnancy Doesn’t Have to be Stressful

For those of you that have struggled with proper nutrition before you discovered you would be eating for two, don’t fear! It won’t take long to learn what choices are healthy and which ones are not. As long as you are willing to take a little time and learn how to adjust your diet, you will be able to stick to the plan.

A healthy diet for pregnancy is a beautiful thing, because it will be the first “diet” you’ve ever been on that isn’t a diet at all. A healthy pregnant woman should be gaining weight, but slowly over the course of each trimester. If you gain anymore than 3 pounds in any given week or more than 2 pounds in the third trimester, you may be eating more than you need.

Trade in Empty Carbs for Nutritious Meals

A noshing mommy should do her best to avoid empty calories. Empty calories are what you will find at the bottom of a bag of potato chips, underneath the greasy pizza lid and in your fast food bag. Trade in those chips for a handful of nuts or an orange. Skip the pepperoni and instead whip up a delicious grass fed beef burger (iron-rich!) with some organic sweet potato fries.
